Samsung galaxy S - MTP usb device problem fix, TRANSFERING FILES ONLY!
By josh xD
Lets start with the problem..
Hi, if your like me, and over time you've got particually annoyed with the MTP usb device driver not found problem then read this HUB. Basically the problems occurs with Windows 7 64bit mainly, this is because Kies (samsungs "high tech" phone syncing program) doesnt support windows 7, yet. Samsung users will only have to wait till the new froyo comes out on the 23rd september to get there bugs fixed so hold tight.
However, for now, your kies may still be broken, and not connect to your galaxy S. If your like me and simply want to use kies to transfer files but you cant, then look no further, This solution is GUARENTEED to work.
If you connect your device to your laptop (which is windows 7 64bit, i dont know how to solve other operting systems but i gather it will be just the same) then the device manager style box should pop up and give you a list of drivers its "trying" to install. One of which should be the "MTP USB DEVICE" this should then say failed. There is another problem ive came across with is CDC, but im not explaining it in this HUB. Once this fails, you should notice that there is no way of connecting to kies. or is there?
Solving the issue
So, you've made it this far, and we've both established that we both have the same problem. Now to solve this issue you can do two things. First of is the most simple, however this didnt work for me, it does however work for alot of other people. DOWNLOAD THIS FILE.. http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDownload/Samsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x64-Download-96693.html the file is a samsung driver for your phone. Simply use WinRar to extract the WHOLE folder to your desktop. Then go to control panel, find device manager, scroll down till you see MTP USB device, it should have a yellow triangle next to it. Right click on it, "update drivers" browse for your extracted folder, MAKE SURE SUB FOLDERS IS TICKED. Click the file and your done, if its worked that it. If it hasnt worked, you'll get a message saying "your device drivers are allready up to date" or something of that sort.
And thats when you have to do my solution. Now, this is simple, if you follow my instructions to the letter. First of go onto your samsung galaxy and navigate to settings, scroll down and go to about phone, then go to usb settings. Click mass storage (circle should go green). Go back, connect your usb, when your usb is connected, drag the notification bar on the top of ure galaxy s down, click usb connection, and click MOUNT. This will mount your SD card which you MUST have for this to work. I really should of stated that above. After you have done this, simply go to my computer and you will see your phone, and the memory card mounted on your computer. This means you can acess the device via computer, enabling you to transfer files!

Keep up the Great job josh, Thanks for sharing... ;)
No problem:) and i sure will, new hubs everyday hopefully
Yes nice work arround, but you're still not able to connect to KIES
Yeah i know that, as explained it i do mention how this doesnt connect you to KIES (I think). And that is a big problem, not so for me, because ive rooted my device and i dont need to use KIES to update to the next froyo. However for others its a problem, i got around it on my other laptop my searching for MTP drivers across the net. Theres plenty out there which work well. Just simply you to control panel, devices, and look for MTP USB DRIVER DEVICE. Right click, properties i think? or update driver, then locate the driver you downloaded and update the MTP driver. Works like a charm

THIS FILE IS NOT SUPPORTED FOR WINDOW 7
I M USING WINDOW 7 PLZ ADVISE
As i said in the Hub, that method didnt work for me, the second method (the last paragraph of this Hub) does work. Follow the instructions of that paragraph to the letter. If you are looking to work KIES, you will have to look elsewhere, i havent yet found a flawless solution to fix that problem, however, froyo 2.2 will be released really soon, so watch out on the samsung site.
Thank you!! Holy hell this took a lot of trial and error before I finally got it connected and working properly. Mounting the SD card is what fixed it for me. I have a Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant and Windows 7.
Cheers mate, helped me sort this within ten minutes!
No problem :) glad i could help
It works for me! Thank you
No problem :) follow me people?
I'm on Windows Vista (gag) and Kies was still #%*!@. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU.
HELP!!! Phone says its connected to usb and is not but when i do connect it wont work so how do i transfer files to my sd card i put in???
Right, read all the above againa and make sure, you have changed your usb selection to " choose on connection " or "ask on connection" when you connect it, pull down the notification bar, and click the connection, then touch mount, your memory card should show on the screen
Your guide was really simple! Thanks mate - I also need the KIES for the froyo update.. any chance of doing a similar guide for rooting/updating firmware to froyo manually? Cos I don't think Samsung will ever fix KIES!
Eureka!
Thanks. :o)
Ha!!! thank u so much dude!! you effing rock
To Gav , Sorry for the really late reply Gav, hopefully you've solved your problem and you've updated to froyo 2.2, however just incase you havent and your checking this hub daily ill explain how you can work around getting kies working.
Its a really simple technique, either you can format your internal SD card, by going to settings > SD card and phone storage > format SD card OR you can simply connect using mass storage mode, drag the notification bar down, mount the SD card, access the SD card in "My computer" and delete everything file on the internal SD card that has 16 OR MORE CHARACTERS.
Hopefully this helps you out, thanks for reading :)
Josh
just a heads up followed your instructions with Kies running in background. once I mounted the USB mass storage device Kies recognized my phone.
Thanks for the help you cured my migraine
Cheers bro the drivers worked like a charm (Y)
hey thanks... it helped me...
can you show me in what all ways i can use this device in USB mode (if possible in a video link)
thanks again!!!
Hey I had the same problem myself but with windows 7 32-bit.
Downloading the suggested driver worked a charm, but of course with the x86 version, which can be found here:
it worked. i can't believe it, finally having installed just about every driver in the world!
do you not know how to make it connect in kies though? try as I might it's still not recognising it and just saying MTP device, error occured. required section not found in the INF????
thanks though, lovely not to have to get my mem card out each time! RELIEF!
As i matter off fact i do know how to connect to kies now. Alls you've got to do is delete every file on your internal SD card which is over 16 characters long or alternatively just format the Internal SD card through the options menu. Hope this helps
Wonderful, this saved me alot of time!
Thank you sooo much.
fantastic thank you so much for your help!!!
thank you very much. i tried so long to make it and then i read your hub and it works within 5 minutes.
brilliant, pics uploaded easy to read and follow, i believe you are a star
Thank you bro!

Cheers Dude!
Thanks so much for the link!! It fixed everything for my samsung exhibit 2!
TY BRO !
Try updating your windows media player to version 11.
You dont know hoe to do it with a mac by any chance? My phone doesn't evenncome up on the computes even tho it says connected on my phone.
Thank you very much. You don't know how helpful you have been. Best regards
Good idea, BUT "go to about phone, then go to usb settings" is wrong instruction!!! USB settings are under Wireless and Network section ;-)
I have a Samsung Galaxy S and I tried the second (also simple) solution but my phone (for some reason) didn't have the USB settings under "About Phone" so to solve this I simply connected the USB to my laptop and when asked selected the "Mass Storage option". Once connected I dropped down the notification bar and clicked on USB storage and it gave me the option to mount, and after doing so was able to get my files transferred! Thank you so much for the advice! Just wanted to let you know mine didn't have the options listed (maybe the update?) Anyway, much appreciated!
Also there was no "USB settings" under "Wireless & Network" settings... not on my phone anyway. I couldn't find a "USB Settings" under any category. However, was still able to get files transferred using method above.
Sorry for posting so much. Just FYI I did finally find USB Storage settings under "Applications".
Thanks for tip we managed to connect Samsung W
for windows 7 profesional 32-bit ... not work :((
